Conclusion
In the liability and workers' compensation areas costs continue to decrease, even though we saw an increase in the number of liability claims.
By this we believe departments are demonstrating a commitment to risk management. We applaud this commitment.
We would like to see this commitment grow in the vehicle accident area. As mentioned in last year's report we have implemented an e-learning program targeted at assessing driver weaknesses and recommending driver training modules to address those weaknesses. It has had positive results and feedback in a few departments and we are expanding it into other departments.
However, driver training will only go so far in addressing the issue of distraction and inattention. Focusing on the task of driving and eliminating distractions (such as cell phones and other hand-held electronic devices) are areas that need constant reminders. Our plan is to heighten awareness through multiple avenues during the coming year.
Lastly, our efforts to engage all areas of County work continue. A new motto we've adopted is a good thought to leave you with,
"Safety isn’t expensive, it’s priceless".
