Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for deputy positions must meet the "Minimum Standards for Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer" as provided for in OAR 259-008-0010.
These standards include:
- U.S. Citizenship
- At least 21 years old
- High-school diploma or GED certificate of high-school equivalency
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to obtain valid driver's license
- No criminal convictions (other than minor traffic violations)
- Visual acuity, sufficient hearing
- Drug-use assessment
Veterans and disabled veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
Per State Law and Clackamas County Policy, you CANNOT be a Deputy Sheriff in Clackamas County, Oregon if:
- You cannot obtain valid driving privileges in Oregon.
- You are not at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
- You will not be a U.S. citizen within 18 months of being hired.
- You have been convicted of driving under the influence of intoxicants (D.U.I.I.) within the past 5 years (a diversion or similar action is considered the same as a conviction). You have been convicted of Reckless Driving, Attempting to Elude, Hit and Run (Failure to perform the duties of a driver…), or Driving while Suspended / Revoked within the last 5 years.
- You have been convicted of a Domestic Violence Assault.
- You have been convicted of a felony.
- You have been convicted of any crime involving controlled substances.
- You have a Dishonorable Discharge from the armed services.
- You do not have a High School Diploma or GED.
- The State of Oregon will not provide the required certification if you have been convicted of any of the crimes listed in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR), Section 259-008-0070 Denial/Revocation.
Per Clackamas County Selection Criteria, you are NOT LIKELY to be hired as a Clackamas County Deputy Sheriff if:
- Your traffic record, police contacts and/or accident reports show a continuing and/or recent pattern of poor decision making.
- Your personal life shows a history of poor judgment.
- You have a history of involvement in criminal activity.
- Your work history shows a pattern of unexcused absences, discipline and/or discharge.
