Senior Companion Program
Program Description
The goals of the Senior Companion Program (SCP) include:
- Developing volunteer service opportunities through which low-income older persons can contribute to their communities.
- Providing a stipend and other benefits which enable eligible persons to participate as Senior Companions without cost to themselves.
- Establishing new social service roles for low-income older persons through which they can maintain a sense of self-worth, retain physical health and mental alertness, and enrich their social contacts.
- Providing supportive services to adults, especially older persons, in an effort to maintain independent living.
SCP volunteers are 55 years of age or older, no longer in the regular work force, and have been deemed to be capable of serving adults with exceptional needs without physical detriment to either themselves or to the adult served. If income eligible, SCP volunteers may receive a $2.65 an hour non-taxable stipend plus mileage reimbursement.
Volunteer Recruitment
If you are 55 years of age or better, no longer in the regular workforce, able to serve adults with functional/access needs and volunteer at a minimum of 15 hours per week, please call us today! Our seniors need companionship and your support.
Training and other resources for volunteers are available!
SCP in Action
In a recent survey, clients were asked, “Has your life improved by having a Senior Companion? If so, how? Every response was “Yes”.
Excerpts included:
“Don’t know what I would do without her.”
“Without her I would be in a nursing home.”
“I used to have a sour attitude, she sweetened me up.”
“Life is much more interesting.”
“The best thing in my life.”
Senior Companions provide reassurance to other seniors that someone will be there for them in the time of need.
